Calumet Morning

Copper Country Window |

This week we’re trying a few new things at Explorer. One of those things is a almost-live glimpse into the day to day world of the Copper Country. As most of you have probably noticed, most posts on this site are on about a 3 month delay. The photos and videos we feature on any day were not taken that day, but instead were taken months before during one of our excursions. Because of this, you will still be seeing summer photos in the middle of winter.

To provide a more “up-to-date” look at the Copper Country, we are starting a new daily feature called Copper Country Window. Here we will provide a photo from today, taken during the exploration we took today. This way you can see what the weather and atmosphere of the Copper Country is every day. Now for today’s photo:

this morning in downtown Calumet

Today we took a walk down the alleyways of Calumet. This summer was a busy time for facade work along 5th Street. Thanks to generous government grants many buildings underwent facelifts, making a striking difference in the look and feel of downtown. However, the backside of these same buildings have underwent very little renovation in the last 100 years, making a trip down the alleys a walk back into time.

We took over 260 photos of these alleyways this morning, getting a more detailed view of an aging metropolis. It was a sunny morning but much colder then it looked. This photo features the twin spires of St. Paul’s Church on 8th street. To the right is the bell tower to the old Calumet fire station, now a nice little museum.
