Snowbound
After oversleeping for a few months, winter has finally awoken here in the Copper Country. It hasn’t taken it long to get to work either, dumping a good amount of snow across the peninsula already. Earlier in the week, we took our first snowshoe excursion into the trails and woods encompassing the old Allouez and North Kearsarge mines. While mild at first, the lake effect snows kicked in making for a white wintry wonderland. Take a look.
looking down the old Kearsarge/Copper City road once serving the North Kearsarge and Allouez mines and now a snowmobile trail
a wet lake effect snow clinging to everything it touches
like an ancient castle entrance, an opening along an old smokestack base is filled with ash and snow
series of retaining walls and building foundations lie scattered about along the trail - once supporting an overhead trestle long since removed
an unreadable sign and barb wired fence protects us from an old mine shaft
forming its own trail along the snow covered forest floor, this old hoist cable weaves in and out (and sometimes through) the tress and brush. We followed it for a while, but quickly lost it in the snow
returning to town via another road, we cross an old bridge crossing a rather active stream from this time of year
